A wart or verruca vulgaris on the tongue is a condition that needs to be taken care of immediately. This can be a nuisance to daily work and can be physically straining.
This condition is a highly infectious one that can be transmitted through kissing, or by oral and genital contact. This is a worldwide phenomenon that affects a small percent of the population. This is said to be common to people who are immunocompromised and those who are under the profession of meat handling. According to studies, warts commonly appear to whites than blacks or Asians. Basing on the gender, the ratio of appearance is equally distributed to men and women. This can also occur to all age groups but peaks at the age of 12 to 16 and to the young adults.
Symptoms of Warts on Tongue
These warts appear to be single in number but may also appear in clusters. The appearance of these warts can be a discomfort to the affected person. This can emit pain which is usually a result of irritation. The patient shall experience difficulty in speaking, eating and drinking because of the warts. Warts are raised sections of the skin that are accompanied by lesions or some cold sores. Warts are generally compared to the shape of a cauliflower. This can complicate to bleeding if not treated immediately.
Warts on Tongue Causes
The cause of these warts is a viral agent. This is transmitted via sexual contact from one person to another. This is called the human papillomavirus, a lifelong viral agent that may lay dormant in our body once acquired. This is sexually transmitted, but there are also cases that it’s not. During oral sex, one is susceptible to acquire this. The mere contact of the virus-carrying lesion or wound shall increase one person of the chance of acquiring the disease.
The HPV has many types indentified. Acquisition of this virus can result to many types of warts such as genital, flat and deep palmoplantar warts. Specific virus strains cause warts and these are HPV types 2 and 4, followed by types 1, 3, 27, 29 and 57.
Warts on Tongue Treatment
Since this is a viral infection, the cure for this condition is a bit hard to attain. There has been no full proposed cure of the human papillomavirus. The only action for this condition is to treat the patient’s presenting symptoms. Still, the assistance of some antiviral medications is needed but does not present proposed treatment. It is to be expected that the treatment result shall be scarring or discoloration of the area affected.
Difficulty in eating is treated by the doctor by application of antiviral creams. The discomfort is relieved through pain medications. Topical anesthetic or topical analgesic is applied. It is highly advised that seeking the doctor’s help is a must. If the person has difficulty in eating, chewing and swallowing food, it is advised that he or she is provided with soft foods.
Some medical drugs are given to patients specifically to treat HPV such as the viral drugs. Cidofovir is an antiviral agent that is used to treat patients who are immunocompromised such as the HIV patients. A topical agent such as salicylic acid is a proposed first-line treatment for warts.
Laser treatment is done to patients for warts. This involves local or general anesthesia induction. This is done to warts that are resistant to drug therapy.
One should also prevent the spreading of the condition. A person affected should be socially responsible. Do not spread the disease by protecting others from transmission. Be aware of the present condition and seek medical attention immediately to avoid the spread.
It has been noted that warts disappear within 2 years. This can be resolved without the possibility of scarring. But the scarring is inevitable especially in cases of resistant warts. Recurrence is a possibility. Some has presented a home remedy for the removal of these warts. These include the following:
- Tea tree oil – with the use of cotton swab, apply tea tree oil several times in a day. This has been noted as a capable for destroying bacteria and is said to be an antiseptic tool.
- Banana peels – rubbing of the banana peel on the tongue can be effective in clearing the area. Rubbing the area several times a day is recommended.
- Raw potatoes – cut the potato and rub it on the affected area. One should follow the remedy for 2 weeks to attain good result.
- Aloe vera – this can reduce the discomfort that an affected person is experiencing. This is also known to speed up the healing process. Application is done with a cotton ball.
- Garlic – the use of garlic has paved its way of effectively removing warts. This is proposed to have an antiviral property. This can remove the warts in a short time by covering the wart with mashed garlic.
