What is an Infected Pimple?

A pimple is a small inflammation on the skin. This may start to show up specifically during puberty or adolescence when the oil glands go hyperactive. About 80 per cent of people in their teenage years suffer from pimples in their lifetime. Nevertheless, this condition may still continue even during adulthood and this is a big bane to wonderful skin. For us to find a good solution to this problem, it would be crucial for us to understand how pimples develop.

Pimples, zits, spots are medically termed as acne and acne vulgaris being the common type. Typically, the skin is composed of sebaceous glands. These glands are scattered all throughout the body but are more prominent on the scalp, face, chest, and back. This is a skin condition which arises when there is hyperactivity of the sebaceous glands which cause the pores to clog. Once the pores get clogged with sebum, there’s a huge tendency that bacteria would thrive thereby causing infection. Infected pimples can become very painful and these may be stubborn to treat. There are several factors that can be linked to this condition. Age, heredity and the kind of lifestyle that you have could be among the factors which cause pimple formation. You will further understand how pimples form in the following paragraphs.

Before pimples appear to be inflamed and pus-filled, it may also be prior manifested with the following symptoms:

These are not yet infected and otherwise termed as close comedones. Whiteheads are small and appear to be under the skin.

From the name itself you can already tell that this appears to be black. A lot of people have a wrong notion about blackheads. Oftentimes, most of us are convinced that these form due to the accumulation of dirt and we may have the tendency to scrub our face vigorously. This does not help at all and instead aggravate the condition. Blackheads are open comedones which made them appear dark or black and scrubbing them real hard would not eventually remove them.

These appear to be smaller as compared to papules. Papules tend to appear pink.

Often bigger than a papule. These are typically pus-filled and can be entirely visible on the surface of the skin with a red base. Most people hate to see pustules on their skin because of their annoying appearance.

Nodules can be comparable to papules. Only that these are bigger compared to papules and may be painful to touch. Nodules may also develop deeper into the skin.

These are often pus-filled and often very painful. This type of pimple usually causes scar formation.

There can be several things that would lead to pimple formation. Despite the several speculated causes of pimples, there’s only one thing that is the sure cause of pimple and this can be due to excessive sebum production. Your skin typically sheds off regularly. However, when there is overproduction of sebum this would tend to clog your pores.

Pimples get infected when the dead cells get stuck on the skin and mix up with sebum and bacteria, specifically Propionebacterium acnes which is the most common cause of pimple formation. The causative agent is a normal flora of the skin. However, with excessive sebum on the skin these bacteria tend to thrive in it and excessive P. acnes on the skin would eventually lead to infected pimple.

As with men, they are also more predisposed to have an infected pimple owing to the fact that they may be teeming with the hormone called testosterone. This hormone is also among the reasons why sebum may go overdrive. People with oily skin are more predisposed to pimples.

Each of us typically gets affected with pimple at some point in our lives. There are pimples that simply go away without applying any acne medications to it. However, there are certain instances that pimples get infected which can cause lots of discomfort. It is imperative that you treat pimples which have become cystic because this leads to scarring. Pimple treatments vary depending on whichever works best for you. Some people may find a certain acne treatment effective while this may not work the same for others.

There are actually several ways on how you can solve your pimple problems. You can deal with acne in three basic steps. First off, you need to learn how to unclog your pores from dirt, sebum and bacteria then you can look for medications that would help kill the bacteria and lastly, find ways on how you can minimize oil. However, before you can rush into that you must first observe a healthy lifestyle. That means you have to eat the right type of food and get enough sleep. No matter how we try hard to adhere to a healthy kind of living, we may still have lapses following it. Thus, treat your infected pimple through the following:

Use Mild Cleansers

Some used to believe that by washing their face several times a day they would be able to steer clear from pimples. However, this is a wrong notion. Washing your face several times daily just tends to exacerbate the condition since this would strip off the natural oils of your face leaving it dry. As a form of the body’s compensatory mechanism, it further produces oil to buffer out the dryness. You can instead use a mild cleanser to cleanse your face just twice daily.

Exfoliate Regularly

Look for skin care products that would help exfoliate your skin. These include those that contain salicylic acid, Retinol and other peeling agents. However, do not also overdo exfoliation.

Eradicate the Bacteria

Now that you have cleansed and exfoliated, the next best thing for you to do is to kill whatever is causing you acne. Experts would usually suggest you to use products that contain benzoyl peroxide. There are also other available acne medications that can be prescribed by your dermatologist.

Minimize the Oil

It is somehow tricky for you to control oil production because even strong pimple treatments like isotretinoin and accutane can only temporarily control your acne. You may use products with alpha hyroxy acids because these help exfoliate the surface of your skin reducing the sebum on it.

These are just a few ways on how you can deal with infected pimples. Never ever attempt to squeeze and pop it because this just worsens the pimples. This can only be done by your dermatologist. Also try to avoid touching your face without washing your hands as you are only introducing bacteria on your face. Through this simple ways, you are able to deal with pimples affectively.
